The August Class I base skim milk price came in at $13.18 per hundredweight, a $2.73 drop from July. That is a significant single-month move, and it did not arrive in isolation.
USDA's July 2026 WASDE report raised the 2026 milk production forecast to 236.6 billion pounds, reflecting a larger national cow herd and consistent output per cow. Class III and Class IV futures are expected to trade in the $16.75 to $17.50 per hundredweight range through December. The all-milk price for 2026 is now projected at $20.00 per hundredweight, down from $20.70 in the June WASDE.
For cooperative operators managing producer payroll, scheduling and milk placement through the end of the year, the picture is clear: more milk, lower prices, tighter margins. This post explains what those numbers mean at the operational level and where cooperatives should focus right now.
U.S. milk production is growing faster than demand can absorb the extra volume. Cheese, butter and nonfat dry milk prices are all moving lower as a result. When product prices fall, Class III and Class IV values follow. When Class III and Class IV fall, the all-milk price follows.
The U.S. heifer inventory is up 100,000 head after years of declining cow numbers. That inventory is working its way into the milking herd now. The additional output was predictable. The question for cooperatives is not why prices are falling, but what to do about it operationally before December.
Producer pay is directly tied to milk prices, and the month-to-month swings are now large enough to create real cash flow stress on dairy farms. A $2.73 drop in the Class I skim base price in a single month catches producers mid-budget cycle.
Cooperatives that manage producer payroll on a weekly or bi-weekly basis need accurate, real-time price data flowing into their payment calculations. When a USDA price announcement drops and the cooperative is still running last week's numbers, producers receive incorrect estimates, generate support calls and lose confidence in the cooperative's systems.
Milk Moovement pulls Federal Order pricing data into producer payroll calculations within hours of each Federal Order posting. That means your payroll team works from current numbers, not placeholders that need to be cleaned up after the fact.
When milk prices fall and producer margins tighten, the pressure to reduce hauling costs intensifies. Every dollar saved on haul distance or route efficiency matters more when the per-hundredweight return is lower.
This is also the period when some producers consider reducing production, moving milk to a different cooperative or exiting the market. Cooperatives that track route utilization and milk volume by farm in real time are better positioned to catch those signals early. A farm that drops volume by 10% for two consecutive months is worth a conversation before it becomes a formal exit notice.
Live dispatch data and real-time volume tracking are not optional during a margin compression cycle. They are the difference between managing disruption and reacting to it after the fact.
Review your milk placement contracts for flexibility. If product prices continue to soften through Q4, cooperatives with flexible balancing arrangements are in a better position than those locked into fixed commitments at prices that no longer reflect the market.
Run a hauling cost review now. Route efficiency gains that seemed incremental in a higher-price environment now move the needle. A 5% reduction in haul cost per hundredweight has more producer impact when the all-milk price is at $20.00 than when it was at $22.00.
Get your producer communication ready. Producers will see August pricing and have questions. A cooperative that clearly explains how Federal Order pricing flows into their pay statement builds trust. A cooperative that responds with "we are still calculating" loses it.
The second half of 2026 will test cooperative operators across margins, scheduling and producer relations. Milk Moovement handles over 20% of U.S. milk production, and we built the platform to give cooperatives the data they need to manage these conditions in real time.
