The November Class I Base Price Hit $20.27 Per Hundredweight. Here Is What It Means for Co-op Milk Placement.

The USDA advanced the November Class I base price to $20.27 per hundredweight on October 21. That is a $1.39 increase from October and the first time the base has cleared $20 since July. It is also $3.52 higher than November 2025.

For cooperative operators managing milk placement across processing facilities and order types, that number matters. But it does not tell the full story.

Class I Is Not the Whole Milk Price Picture

The Class I base of $20.27 is the starting point for calculating what processors pay for fluid milk in each Federal Milk Marketing Order. Zone differentials are added on top of the base, which is why the average Class I price across all orders works out to around $24.39 per hundredweight. The actual price paid depends on which order your milk is priced under and the utilization rate in that order.

Meanwhile, Class III futures settled in the $16 to $17 range heading into November. That gap between Class I and Class III is roughly $3 to $4 per hundredweight. The spread matters because it directly affects how co-ops think about where to move milk when there is flexibility in placement.

What the Class I-III Spread Means for Milk Placement

In a Federal Order system, higher Class I utilization generally means better blend prices for producers. When Class I is meaningfully above Class III and Class IV, moving additional milk into fluid markets can lift the blend price for your entire producer base.

Most cooperatives do not have unlimited flexibility in milk placement. Long-term contracts, plant relationships and hauling logistics all constrain where milk can go. But operators who manage pooling and placement decisions need to be working from current price data, not last month's figures.

The $1.39 jump from October to November is not a trend line. It is one month. But the direction matters. November Class I is $3.52 above where it was a year ago. That is a meaningful shift in the economics of fluid milk utilization.

Why the Class I Mover Formula Is Worth Understanding

Federal Order modernization changed how the Class I price is calculated. The revised Class I mover formula means the base now reflects the higher of Class III or Class IV skim rather than the average of the two. In November, Class IV skim appears to be the higher input based on current market data.

That is one reason the Class I base came in stronger than some operators expected heading into Q4. Co-ops that understand how the mover formula works are better positioned to anticipate Class I movements before the official announcement rather than reacting after.

What to Watch in the Next 60 Days

Three things matter for co-op milk placement decisions between now and year-end.

First, the December Class I advance announcement will come on or before November 23. After the unusually strong November figure, the direction of that announcement will shape Q4 blend price calculations for cooperatives across every Federal Order.

Second, December 18 is the deadline for 2027 Dairy Margin Coverage enrollment. For producers who rely on DMC as a backstop, the relationship between Class I and manufacturing class prices matters in that calculation as well.

Third, Class III and Class IV futures. The gap between Class I and the manufacturing classes reflects market expectations about where surplus milk will go. A narrowing spread changes the case for fluid utilization.

Milk Moovement gives cooperative operators real-time visibility into milk volumes, routes and placement data. That visibility is particularly useful when pricing signals change quickly. Operators working from current data make better placement decisions than those catching up after the month closes.
